Oxygen is used in the gaseous state to sustain life through direct delivery to the patient. Oxygen can be stored as a gas in cylinders or as a liquid in bulk tanks. It is classified as a nonflammable gas; however it can increase the range of flammability of other materials and gases when present in sufficient concentration. Its storage requires proper construction and ventilation, in accordance NFPA 99 and NFPA 50.
